Thomas Burberry
Thomas Burberry opened his first store in 1856 in Basingstoke, Hampshire. A few years later, Mr Burberry invented a hardwearing, water-resistant but breathable gabardine.
In 1891 another store in the Haymarket, London, was opened. Thomas Burberry was an outfitter for Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole and Ernest Shackleton, who lead an expedition to cross Antarctica in 1911. He also invented "trench coats" for the British officers to wear during the war. They became very popular with civilians after the war. Another Burberry's specialisation was aviation garments.
Today, Burberry is a luxury fashion house. The company is well known for its check pattern. It has got stores all over the world. Apart from clothes & accessories, the label also has a fragrance line.
