I love women…. we can justify a must-have purchase under any circumstance. After almost four years working in fashion, I have heard some of the most colourful excuses under the sun – usually made to reluctant husbands who sit grumbling in our chair. But it is amazing – the husbands can be as encouraging and compliant as can be, or not even be there at all, and we still feel the necessity to make excuse after excuse to buy ourselves something nice. I now realize that retail therapy just isn’t retail therapy without the requisite amount of guilt and excuse making. As grown up girls, we rival even the kids with their ‘dog-ate-my-homework’ moments when it comes to clothes buying.

But it doesn’t stop there! Following our fabulous guilt-infested purchases, we then come up with bigger and better plans for sneaking our goods into the house undetected- even by the family dog… Now, I know that this isn’t just me, having packaged up pieces from Farhi to Michael Stars, only to have them stashed in amongst some magazines, in a day-to-day handbag or in one case, a brown paper bag (one of the many this particular lady carried with her just for this purpose!) My own most cunning moment was removing all the tags from a new dress and stashing it at the very bottom of the washing pile, so that when it surfaced, it was ‘clearly’ a pre-worn well loved piece (ha – secret’s out now, I’m in for it later!)
