Vanity sizing. We’ve all heard of this by now, and probably have all suffered its consequences. I realised how wide spread a problem this has become when my fashion illiterate boyfriend went to buy his annual pair of bargain jeans in his regulation size and they were huge on him – and he’s certainly not changed shape so it must be the jeans!
If we knew we just had to drop a size to fit into everything, that would be fine and we’d quite happily get used to it. But it’s not as simple as that. Oh no, that would make life far too easy. For some labels you need to drop a size and conversely, in others you need to go up a size.
As requested by a customer last week, I am now going to try to give you some kind of size guide for our labels here in Totnes. This is in no way official and simply stems from experience on the shop floor and my own shopping habit. Just to give you some perspective, I land somewhere in-between a size 12 and a size 14.
Avoca Anthology
Accurate to slightly small. If you’re an in between size, tend to go up a size rather than down.
European Culture
Tops – accurate to slightly small. Again, if you’re an in-between like me, go up a size
Bottoms – On the small side on a regular basis.
French Connection
Accurate sizing – you tend to be what you think you’re going to be, which is a blessing!
Great Plains
On the smaller side of accurate.
Jackpot
Generous sizing on a regular basis. I often advise customers to go down a size both on the top and bottom half. (For you smaller ladies that like this make and have found it too big in the past, you’ll be glad to know we are now stocking some size 6 pieces (size 32)
Marilyn Moore
Accurate sizing.
Farhi
Tops – on the larger side of accurate
Trousers – now this is a difficult one! Last season saw all Farhi bottoms being very generous. However, for autumn winter 2007, she’s tightened up a bit. Now we are finding that the more tailored styles such as the formal trousers are coming up fairly accurately, but the more casual styles such as cords and jeans are still coming up on the generous side, though not as much as last season.
Noa Noa
On the larger side of accurate on a regular basis. If you are an in-between size, go down a size rather than up.
Numph
Small. Very. Go up a size unless you already wear petite!
Odd Molly.
Accurate sizing so far.
Out of Xile
Accurate sizing. Perhaps a little generous on the top half at times.
Sandwich
On the generous side apart from in knitwear. In everything else If you’re an in between size, always go down rather than up a size.
Stewart & Brown
Accurate. Organic. Gorgeous… This is love in t-shirt form!
